Innovative AI-Powered Lighting System for Pedestrian Safety in Fortaleza, Brazil
In Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará, a road safety project is being developed that promises to reduce traffic accidents through an intelligent pedestrian lighting system. Still in the research and testing phase, the project consists of activating a set of lights through artificial intelligence when human presence is detected on the crosswalk. When someone crosses, the lighting is activated, illuminating only the area where the pedestrian is walking, along the entire length of the crosswalk.
The AI system is capable of identifying multiple pedestrians, even if they are walking in opposite directions. Fortaleza was chosen to receive the pilot project due to its road safety numbers in the capital. In 2022, the city recorded the eighth consecutive reduction in the number of deaths in traffic, with 158 deaths on the roads. This number was 58% lower compared to 2014, when 377 people lost their lives.
